The Force That Finally Learned About Rain

The Force That Finally Learned About Rain

Nike Air Force 1 Mid '07 GORE-TEX Vibram Wheat

There is a week every fall in Central Texas when the Air Force 1 stops being the right shoe and everybody wears it anyway.

The first real cold front rolls through Hutto. The parking lot at the Commons is wet by lunch. Somebody comes in still wearing the pair they bought in May, leather dark at the toe, sock line damp, and they already know what they are about to ask. Do you have anything that still looks like a Force but will not soak through by the time they get back to the truck?

That question is older than this shop. The Air Force 1 has been the default shoe since 1982, and the mid showed up a year later for people who wanted a little more ankle support without giving up the silhouette. For forty years the answer to bad weather was the same. Wear them. Accept the wet sock. Or switch to a boot and feel like you left the shoe you actually like at home.

Nike finally stopped pretending leather was enough. The Air Force 1 Mid '07 GORE-TEX Vibram is the mid built for the week the weather turns. Same shape you already know. Collar up over the ankle, strap across the laces, the wheat leather that reads more like a work boot than a sneaker once the light drops. Under the leather is a GORE-TEX bootie, so rain stays out and the shoe can still breathe on a 70-degree afternoon after a 45-degree morning. Texas does that. The outsole is Vibram instead of the usual herringbone, which is the part you notice the first time you step off a curb onto wet pavement and the shoe stays put.

Wheat is the warm colorway that looks like it belongs next to a flannel and a pair of jeans, and it does not announce itself as a "tech" shoe from across the room. The GORE-TEX and the Vibram are doing the work. The upper is just an Air Force 1 that grew a collar and decided to be useful past October.

We have been stocking Forces in our shop for years, and most of those pairs went home with somebody who already knew. The same shoe they keep coming back to, the one that still looks right with anything, an old friend that never stopped belonging.

The AF1 GTX Wheat is that same friend, just ready for the Tuesday they already lived through. Cold rain, a long walk from the car, a Force that used to quit on them. It still looks like the shoe they love. Wheat leather, the mid collar, the strap, the shape we all know. The GORE-TEX and the Vibram are what keep it going when the parking lot turns slick. The rest is why they wanted a Force in the first place. If that Tuesday is coming, this is the pair.

Nike Air Force 1 Mid '07 GORE-TEX Vibram Wheat is $180 at Double R Kicks, 409 W Front Street, Suite 140, Hutto Commons. Open Monday through Friday, noon to 6, Saturday 11 to 5. Come try it on before the next front.
